Business Translation

You put a lot of time and effort in writing original documents. You don't want to lose all of that work when you have it translated.

It’s funny when other people get translation wrong…

And it’s not just the little people you get ‘Lost in Translation’, here are a few examples of the big boys getting things disastrously wrong:

When Kentucky Fried Chicken translated their slogan “Finger likin’ good” into Chinese it came out as “Eat your fingers off”

In Italy, a campaign for Schweppes Tonic Water translated the name into Schweppes Toilet Water.

When General Motors introduced the Chevy Nova in South America, it was apparently unaware that "no va" means "it won't go."

…we’ll make sure it doesn’t happen to you.

You’ve got to admit that they are funny, but you don’t want to be the one to be laughed at.

So, ensuring your marketing material is translated accurately is critical. Not just for your company or your clients it’s vital for your career.

To avoid mis-translation, we only use qualified in country translators. They know the local market and its customs. This ensures that your adverts and promotions have the desired effect when localised into your target language.

Cultural relations

Cultural relations are good, firmly based on a cultural agreement reached in 1987. Efforts are being made to extend the existing agreement in the near future, especially as regards questions of status. The third cultural consultations between Germany and Venezuela held in December 2003 came to a favourable assessment of cooperation to date.

The German scientist Alexander von Humboldt is admired by Venezuelans to this day; the 200th anniversary of his arrival in Venezuela was commemorated in 1999.

Caracas is home to an international school, the Colegio Humboldt, with sixteen teachers from Germany placed by the German Central Agency for Schools Abroad, and in Valencia and Maracaibo there are schools that offer intensive German tuition. The number of native-speaking German pupils at the Colegio Humboldt has, however, diminished considerably in recent years due to the departure of German companies. German is taught at the renowned central university in Caracas (UCV) with the help of a DAAD academic teacher and language assistant. Otherwise, German language courses are only offered at the university in Mérida. The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) opened a students advisory and information centre in Caracas in 2002 to raise interest in Germany as a place of study. The DAAD and the Venezuelan Fundayacucho Foundation are working together to provide scholarships for postgraduate students. The DAAD finances a six-month language course preceding the period of study, while Fundayacucho offers scholarships to doctoral students in the form of loans. Some 30 Venezuelans go to Germany to study each year under this arrangement.

At the end of 2003, the Goethe Institute, which has been in Caracas for decades, was made into a separate legal entity, having previously been institutionally affiliated with the Asociación Cultural Humboldt (ACH), also in Caracas. The two institutions share a spacious cultural centre built twenty years ago with funds from the German government and German companies. Participation in language courses by the Goethe Institute has increased continuously in recent years. There are also Humboldt Associations in Maracay and Maracaibo.
